VW Transporter & Multivan Decals: Design Ideas, Fitment Guide & Installation Tips

Whether you drive a classic T4, a workhorse T5, or a modern T6 Multivan, a set of quality decals is one of the fastest ways to give your van a personality that matches your adventures. In this guide we cover the best design styles for Transporter owners, how to choose the right kit for your generation, and how to apply them cleanly — first time, every time.

Design Ideas: What Looks Great on a Transporter

The long, flat body panels of the VW Transporter are a perfect canvas. Here are the styles that work best:

Topographic side stripes are the most popular choice. Contour lines that wrap the full length of the van create a rugged, outdoorsy look that suits both the Transporter workhorse and the Multivan camper lifestyle. Our best-sellers in this category:

Window graphics add depth and privacy without blocking visibility. A mountain silhouette or canyon scene on the rear quarter windows is a subtle but striking detail:

Retro and camper-style stripes are perfect for converted camper vans and weekend warriors:

Logo and accent decals for a finishing touch:

Fitment Guide: T4, T5, and T6

Not all decal kits are universal, so here's a quick reference:

Generation Years Body Length Notes
T4 1990–2003 SWB / LWB Flatter side panels, great for full-length stripes
T5 2003–2015 SWB / LWB Most popular generation; widest decal compatibility
T6 / T6.1 2015–present SWB / LWB Slightly revised panel lines; most kits still fit

Our kits that explicitly cover all three generations:

How to Apply Decals to Your VW Transporter

A clean application takes about 30–60 minutes and the results last for years. Here's the process:

What you'll need: isopropyl alcohol (70%+), a microfibre cloth, a squeegee or credit card, masking tape, and a heat gun or hair dryer.

Step 1 – Clean the surface. Wipe down the panel with isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Remove any wax, polish, or grease — adhesion depends on it.

Step 2 – Dry-position the decal. Hold the decal against the panel and use masking tape as a hinge along the top edge. Step back and check alignment before committing.

Step 3 – Peel and apply. Fold the decal back, peel away the backing paper a few centimetres at a time, and press down with a squeegee using firm, overlapping strokes from the centre outward. Work slowly to avoid air bubbles.

Step 4 – Remove the transfer tape. Once the decal is fully pressed down, peel the transfer tape back at a low angle (almost parallel to the panel). If any part lifts, press it back down and wait a minute before trying again.

Step 5 – Final press and heat. Run the squeegee over the decal one more time, then apply gentle heat with a heat gun to help the vinyl conform to any panel curves or rivets.

How to Remove Decals Without Damaging Your Paint

  1. Use a heat gun or hair dryer to warm the vinyl — 30–40 seconds per section is enough.
  2. Lift a corner with your fingernail or a plastic trim tool and peel slowly at a low angle.
  3. Remove any adhesive residue with isopropyl alcohol or a dedicated adhesive remover.
  4. Wash and wax the panel to restore the finish.

Quality cast vinyl (what we use) removes cleanly from factory paint without lifting or leaving permanent marks, even after several years.
